Release Day spotlight and Giveaway

I write futuristic and fantasy - but I also love historical westerns so it's great to be able to feature one of these today.  I hope you enjoy reading about this wonderrful new release as much as I did.

Corsets and Cuffs
by Shanna Hatfield
Series: Baker City Brides, #3
Genre: Sweet Historical Western Romance
Release Date: May 12, 2016

Sheriff Tully Barrett never knew trouble had such a pretty face. Brianna Dumont never knew the law could be so handsome and hardheaded.

Pampered and privileged, Brianna Dumont escapes the life she’s always known in an effort to clear her father’s good name. She arrives in Baker City, Oregon, intent on selling her father’s shares in a mine. Only the mine is a bust, her father’s partner is a crusty ol’ coot who hates women, and the sheriff in town is determined to keep her behind bars.

With good friends around him, a small ranch of his own, and a fulfilling job as sheriff, Tully Barrett loves his life. Then an exasperating woman shows up, making demands and driving him crazy. No matter how hard he tries to ignore her brains and beauty, she works her way under his skin.

Corsets and Cuffs captures the fun-loving banter of two strong-willed characters determined not to fall in love in this sweet historical romance.

Games, giveaways, and oodles of fun!

Her jaw dropped open as she gaped at him. “This is ridiculous. Remove these cuffs and release me, this instant.”

“Not happening, your highness.”  He swung open the door to the jail and escorted her through the office back to the cells. No one else was in the building, something for which Brianna was grateful. Mortified to be manhandled on the way to the jail, she certainly didn’t need any spectators to her unexpected imprisonment.

Tully marched her into a cell then removed the cuffs. A smile played around the corners of his mouth as he slammed the door and turned a key in the lock. “You’re under arrest.”

Furious, she spluttered in protest. “For what? I have done nothing more than demand you carry out the responsibilities of the job the good citizens of this town entrusted into your care. You have no right…”

Tully took a step back as she grabbed hold of the cell bars and rattled them.
He smirked. “You are under arrest for assaulting an officer of the law.”

Defiant and insulted, she lifted her chin. “You deserved the slap after that impudent comment.”

Tully ignored her and continued. “You’re under arrest for assaulting an officer, being a public nuisance, harassment, and disorderly conduct.”

Incensed, she rattled the bars again. “I did no such thing, and you know it. This is an outrage. You, sir, are a bully and a beast! I demand an immediate release. Wait until your superiors hear about this. I’ll have you removed from your position. In fact, I won’t stop until the governor of this state has you tossed in prison!”

“Good luck with that, sweetheart.” Tully stalked over to the door, leading to the jail’s office, his gaze hard and penetrating. “Your time might be better spent reflecting on how you ended up in here, Miss Smarty Pants.”

Book One: Crumpets and Cowpies

USA Today bestselling author Shanna Hatfield writes character-driven romances with relatable heroes and heroines. Her historical westerns have been described as “reminiscent of the era captured by Bonanza and The Virginian” while her contemporary works have been called “laugh-out-loud funny, and a little heart-pumping sexy without being explicit in any way.”

Convinced everyone deserves a happy ending, this hopeless romantic is out to make it happen, one story at a time. When she isn’t writing or indulging in chocolate (dark and decadent, please), Shanna hangs out with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller.

EXCERPT
The world seemed eerily quiet as she pushed herself up from the hard packed dirt, only to fall back down. Her ankle hurt. Tears filled her eyes, as she glanced around. There stood the women from the mercantile, staring, and their eyes full of terror. She’d get no assistance from them.
John Hardy strutted into the street and laughed while he gestured for two of his men to pick her up. “Come on, honey, it’s time for our honeymoon.”
She heard the clomping of hooves and the turn of wagon wheels behind her but the wagon didn’t stop to help her either. By this time, a crowd had gathered and now there were men standing with the group of women. She tried to plead for help with her eyes but they glanced away.
Two men grabbed at her to haul her back into the saloon when a loud cocking of a gun erupted from behind.
“Put her down.” A man's voice threatened.
John stepped forward, thrusting out his chest. “Listen, Cinders, this is none of your business. It’d be in your best interest to leave things be.”
The world began to dim and spin, the smell of blood was the last straw. She fainted.

MY REVIEW

Shannon's introduction to her new husband to be is not what she expected, and the rowdy saloon is certainly not what she envisaged when she answered the advert for a 'mail order bride'. Shocked that her prospective husband is not the rancher she was led to believe was waiting for her, she refuses to go have anything to do with John Hardly who slashes her face in rage and spite, taunting her that no other man would want her now.

A man called Cinders comes to her rescue. He gets her face sewn up and realises that he will have to take her back to her ranch as there is nowhere in the town for her to stay.  The townswomen are singularly unsympathetic. In order to protect her reputation they are obliged to get married. Now Shannon has the rancher husband she wanted, and throws herself into being a hardworking wife, even if they are man and wife in name only, and quickly earns the respect and liking of the ranch hands. She is very naive and innocent in some ways and has to lean on the ranch cook for support and advice when she is too shy to ask her husband.

There is plenty of action and suspense in this story, and a little humour too, as Cinders refuses to reveal his first name to his bride, and she tries unsuccessfully to guess it. The reason for his reluctance is not revealed until the end. Both Shannon and Cinders are well drawn, likable characters, and have to endure a lot of dangerous encounters and some misunderstandings before they achieve their happy ever after. The supporting characters are also well portrayed and easy to relate to. The women of the town are not very likable, and make little attempt to hide their prejudice and misinformed opinions of Shannon. There is plenty of action and suspense, and I found this a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable short novel. I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys a romantic historical western with a strong but gentle hero and a feisty, but sweet natured heroine.

New Seion by Diana Green - My review

New SionNew Sion by Diana Green
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love romance, Science Fiction and historical Westerns, so it's not surprising I loved this book!

To start with, it has a real 'frontier' feel to it, with a guntoting heroine, Flynn, pretending to be a young man, and a handsome, chivalrous bounty hunter. The sexual tension between them fairly sizzles, as Flynn tries to keep her true gender a secret from Eamon despite slowly falling in love with him. It's not all a 'Wild West' scenario though, there are several alien species, from the vicious and unpleasant raiders who killed Flynn's parents and raped and kidnapped her sisters, to the honorable Jor, from Krell who is desperate to rescue his Princess after their spacecraft crashes and she is abducted.

Add to the mix a space battle and some interesting world building, including some exotic beasts of burden, and you have an exciting Science Fiction adventure with a light dash of romance. The only negative thing I can say about the story is that, for me, it ended too soon. Although it did have the requisite 'happy ever after' for the protagonists and the ends were neatly tied, I wanted more. I hope there might be a sequal and will certainly be reading Diana Green's other books.
